New to Junior Race
Your first season, made simple.
Junior Race is where most families meet Team Gilboa. Here is what it is, how a season runs, what your racer needs, and who to ask. Read it once in the fall and you are set.
What it is
Ski racing for kids, two nights a week and four Sundays.
Junior Race is Team Gilboa's home program at Hyland Hills for racers U8 through U14. Practices run on weeknights by group, and the Hyland Gold Cup races run on four Sundays each season.
Red
Monday and Wednesday, 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
Blue
Tuesday and Friday, 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
Orange
Thursday 6:00 to 8:00 PM and Saturday 10:00 AM to noon.
Transition
Non-race Sundays. Transition Team athletes race with the Jr. Racers in their age group.
The season
Four steps from sign-up to the first race.
Check in your racer
Confirm your family and your racer in the club's form. That puts you in your group, with the calendar and messages.
Get the app
Download Team Scout and sign in with your mobile number. Practice updates, race reminders and your group's messages land there.
Know the calendar
Practice nights, the Ski Swap, camps, the first night on snow and the four race Sundays are all on one calendar you can sync to your phone.
Read Race Day Info before Race 1
Where to park, the buses, bib pickup, the schedule and the rules are on your group's Race Day Info tab in the app. Four things to do before every home race.
Gear
What your racer needs, and what can wait.
Ask a coach before buying race-specific gear. The Ski Swap in October is the place to find most of it.
Skis, boots and poles that fit
Properly fitted and tuned. Coaches can look them over on the first practice night.
Helmet
Required at every practice and race. A hard-ear helmet for giant slalom; ask a coach which.
Warm layers
Practices run after dark in January. Mittens, a neck warmer and an extra layer under the jacket.
Lift ticket or pass
Hyland lift access for practice nights; race-day tickets are handed out with the bib.
Can wait
Race suits, shin guards and race poles are for later seasons. Start with what you have.
Race day
Your first race, in one line.
RSVP in the app, park at the lot and ride the bus, pick up the bib at the lot, read the schedule. The race day page has everything else, including the five tips from parents who have done it.
Krissy runs Junior Race. Ask her anything.
Krissy MacMahon, Junior Race Managing Director. Replies to club email reach her, and your racer's coaches are at every practice.
